Dr. Susan H. Gray is a speech language pathologist (SLP) and reading specialist who holds professional licenses in Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts. She has over 30 years of teaching experience as a reading specialist, speech language pathologist and professor in hospital (Massachusetts General Hospital), school and private practice settings in New England and New York. Until her recent move back to her home-state of Vermont, she taught full-time as an Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Bridgewater State University, the second largest public university in Massachusetts, where she continues to teach online courses.

Dr. Gray uses evidence-based practice to evaluate and treat individuals who have speech, language and literacy disorders, with special focus on reading and writing difficulties. In her evaluations, she combines assessments of spoken and written language to create a comprehensive picture of an individual’s strengths and needs in language learning. In her treatment, she draws from her background as a reading specialist and speech language pathologist, and her training in structured literacy programs, including Orton Gillingham and the Wilson Reading System.

Based on evaluations, she creates specific goals and objectives to increase students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. In treatment, she uses evidence-based practice to achieve optimal learning gains.

In addition to providing evaluations and treatment in speech, language and literacy, Dr. Gray provides professional development opportunities for teachers, SLPs and instructors in higher education.

In her own research, she studies the effects of teaching phonemes (letter-sound correspondence) and morphemes (base words, prefixes and suffixes) to increase reading and spelling skills. She has published studies in  Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, and The International Journal of Literacy and Numeracy.

Dr. Gray has presented her research at national and international conferences, including the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), American Teacher Educators (ATE), Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR), the Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages (MATSOL) and the International Literacy Association (ILA).
