Southern Vermont Speech Language & Literacy - Evaluation & Treatment for Adults

Evaluation & Treatment for Adults

Do you have difficulty with:

  • Decoding words
  • Spelling words
  • Understanding vocabulary
  • Finding the right words
  • Formulating sentences
  • Reading passages fluently
  • Comprehending what you read
  • Writing sentences, paragraphs, essays
  • Learning to speak and write in English?

Dr. Gray evaluates your speaking and listening (spoken language) skills. This includes semantics (meanings of words and sentences), syntax (formulation and comprehension of sentence structure), phonology/morphology (production and awareness of words’ sounds and meaningful word parts), and pragmatics (social communication and discourse).

She evaluates your reading and writing (written language) skills. For reading issues, she assesses your ability to decode unfamiliar words (word attack), read words (word recognition), understand words’ meanings (reading vocabulary), read fluently (oral reading fluency), and comprehend what you read (reading comprehension). For writing issues, she assesses your ability to encode words (spelling), write simple and complex sentences, paragraphs and multiple paragraphs in grade-appropriate writing genres such as expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative writing.

Treatment:

Based on the results of an evaluation (prior evaluations may also be used), Dr. Gray develops a treatment plan with long-term goals and specific objectives. Treatment focuses on your needs in spoken language (semantics, syntax, phonology/morphology, and pragmatics) and written language, including reading and writing.
